Gary Pearson is a Kelowna-based artist whose distinctive paintings and drawings have been exhibited across Canada, in the USA, Germany, Australia, the UK, and Poland. His work is focused on the transient urban inhabitants of spaces that continue to inspire Pearson as an artist: bars, jazz clubs, diners, and restaurants. Employing an intentionally crude style of mark-making, he seeks to give his work a direct and unmediated quality. Pearson consistently brings complexity and nuance to his work, which is simple only at first glance. Always conscious of the history and iconic imagery of his profession, Pearson's energy, dynamism and sense of style operate on multiple levels.
Gary Pearson is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna. He received his M.A. from the University of Saskatchewan and his B.F.A from the University of Victoria. He has been exhibiting internationally since 1983. He is also an author who has written for several art journals including Border Crossings and Sculpture Magazine. He is the recipient of the International Studio Award at the P.S.1/MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) New York and the 1991 VIVA award.
