Vancouver artist Mark Mizgala taps into our collective memories with a new series of photographs exploring the universal and iconographic. Drawn to images that are intrinsically paradoxical – old but new, lonely but connected, dark but whimsical- the artist presents a pictorial collision of found objects, memories, pop culture and consumerism. Notions of memory, gender politics, and consumerism provide subtext to his recent work, while obvious conclusions or statements are avoided. Dialogue is left open-ended, allowing the viewer to bring forth their own history, prejudice, information and misinformation as they interpret the work.

Patrick Hughes’ painted reliefs demonstrate how deceptive appearances can be, and challenge the preconceived assumptions of eye and brain. These playful hybrids of sculpture and painting are in a constant state of change, dependant on the physical interaction of the viewer. Never static, these “Reverspectives” subvert the empirical view of the world instilled in us during childhood, and encourage the viewer to question their own habits of perception. The work involves the viewer in a physical and conceptual journey in keeping with the notion of transition.
